![]() It's pretty damn expensive but then I knew what I could be in for with another twin turbo BMW (my third), and really would rather be safe than sorry. The Easy Care powertrain warranty won't cover it until it fails completely, it won't do anything for a marginal pump that I have chosen to replace. It's my wife's car and I really don't want to risk leaving her stranded anywhere. At least I now know that the temperature really IS getting high since I monitor it with the hidden menu displayĭo I just bite the bullet and replace the pump/t'stat and know that any cooling system issues would be fixed at that point? But if the pump is acting up, what happens if it completely fails? Then I'm really stranded and I sure don't want the risk of overheating damage. Shut the engine off, restart, and all is fine again. It runs fine for days between heatups and then out of the blue it just happens. He just said it doesn't seem to working right and he was fine with whatever I decided to do.ĭo I just have him flush/refill and then bring it home? Obviously if I do that, there is no guarantee that it won't do it again. He didn't tell me that he thought I should replace it. In this case, $1403 expensive to replace the pump & thermostat. The closest BMW dealer is 180 miles away, yet there are tons of new BMW's here. I live in a very rural area and there are only a few shops that will work on german cars. I get that, but this shop has a good reputation and is listed on. ![]() Now in the back of my mind, I'm always concerned about his incentive as the shop owner to try to sell me the pump. I explained the quick heat up this morning and he concurs that something happened with the pump for it to heat up suddenly as it did. No issue here but he did volunteer to me that the pump isn't failed, but that something isn't right with it. They called me to tell me they were doing the flush and wouldn't be completed by EOB today. I told them to keep it as long as they want so that we can get this entire issue resolved. My code reader hasn't been picking anything up but they have far more diagnostic tools than I do and may be able to find something. When I dropped it off at the shop, I told them to thoroughly check & diagnose any issues that may have occurred with the pump & T'stat. There is an actual leak causing the coolant level to run low 2. There are two possibilities when the coolant light is erratic: 1. The way it happened so suddenly indicated (at least to me), that the water pump or T'stat may be questionable. Having examined BMWs coolant procedure, I believe I located the problem: The coolant level check using the expansion tank float is INVALID unless the coolant is previous filled according to BMWs procedure. Waiting only seconds, I started the engine again & watched the coolant temps plummet back down to mid 80's low 90's C. I pulled over at 114C and shut the engine off. When I got to within a mile of the shop, suddenly the temps started to shoot up. Temp varied with engine load as I would expect. I watched the coolant temps settle in the mid 80s' to mid 90's C on the drive. It's a 20 mile drive to the shop from home and I had the hidden menu temp display up. This seems to have fixed my issue.Took the X3 in to a shop this morning for a coolant flush & refill. Considering that, and the fact that the tank likely has (or will eventually) a micro crack, replace the tank with sensor. So you could do just the sensor, but to get to the sensor, you have to basically remove the tank anyway. With all that said, I replaced my coolant expansion (overflow) tank (**which includes new sensor), and coolant cap (for good measure) today. In regards to the electrical connector I guess that could be dirty or corroded from spilled washer fluid or coolant I think sometimes they just get gunked up / stuck causing the light. In regards to the sensor You can purchase a new sensor for about $17 if that is the part that is failing. My friend had a Porsche that also had a failed coolant tank. If the tank is cracked, something about the loss of pressure can trigger the light. Often times the tanks crack from the seam in the middle. Sometimes you cant see the cracks from the naked eye but they are there. ![]() In regards to the tank They are prone to micro cracks over time from all the heating and cooling cycles. The electrical connector to the sensor at the bottom of the tank There are a few contributing factors hereĬ. I have a 2014 with 72Kįrom what I have gathered with my research / experience:ġ. Funny I had just posted similar topic this past weekend. Chances are you may have a leak if the low coolant warning light comes on. ![]()
